A Royal Air Force (RAF) engineer has died after one of its iconic aerobatic Red Arrow jets crashed in north Wales.

The single-engine Hawk aircraft crashed over RAF Valley in Anglesey around 1.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Defence has named the victim as 41-year-old Corporal Jonathan Bayliss, who was an aircraft mechanic for the Red Arrows.

The pilot survived and is receiving medical care, a RAF spokesman told The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday. He has not been named.

Red Arrow jets, made by British defence company BAE, are famous for their aerobatic displays and stunts, which are performed at events like the annual Trooping the Colour Ceremony in London.

The jet that crashed on Tuesday had been rehearsing for an upcoming performance and was returning to its home base at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, Sky News reported.

Bayliss and the pilot were on board the jet when it crashed. Witnesses saw one parachute ejecting from the plane, Sky News and the Telegraph both reported.

An ambulance was called at around 1.30 p.m., a spokeswoman told Business Insider in a statement, followed by an air ambulance and police.

A photo taken near the crash site showed a plume of black smoke.

UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said on Wednesday:

"It is with deep sadness that I heard of the death of Corporal Jonathan Bayliss whilst flying with the Red Arrows on Anglesey.

"It's clear from his colleagues that he was an incredibly skilled engineer and held in the highest regard as a teammate, a friend, and a shining example of what the British Armed Forces stand for.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this terrible time."
